What Is Just For Men Supposed to Do?

Just For Men is marketed to men who are developing gray hair and would like to hide it. It comes in several formulas, including one designed especially for beards and another that allows some gray hair to peek through. Some of the formulations are designed to be shampooed in and others are applied with a comb. Just For Men has been around since 1987 and is widely available at drugstores, grocery stores or online.

Just For Men claims that most of its products work in just five minutes, and last up to eight weeks. It is supposed to give a natural look by blending the natural hair color in with the gray.

What Is the Problem With Just For Men?

Hundreds of men have reported allergic reactions after using Just For Men. Some of these have been relatively minor, but other men have been hospitalized with severe allergic reactions and swelling that threatened their ability to breathe. Others have suffered chemical burns that left permanent scars.  

The culprit is a chemical known as paraphenylenediamine, or PPD. PPD is a common hair dye ingredient because it gives the dye a more natural look and allows it to withstand repeated washings.

It is also a notorious allergen, and was even named “Contact Allergen of the Year” by the American Contact Dermatitis Society in 2006. The society estimates that PPD causes allergic reactions in 5-7 percent of the people who use it. African Americans are at an even greater risk, and this is compounded by the fact that darker shades of Just For Men may contain higher levels of PPD than the lighter shades.

In most people, the allergic reaction is just a mild skin rash. But in more serious cases, the scalp and face may grow red and swell. The eyelids may swell shut. In the most serious cases, PPD can cause anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that can be fatal. And the reactions are unpredictable: some men have reported allergic reactions after using Just For Men with no problems for years.

Who Makes Just For Men, and do They Know It Causes Allergic Reactions?

Just For Men is made by Combe, Inc., and there’s no question that they are well aware of the reactions their products can cause. In its website and packaging, Just For Men advises you to do a skin allergy test on the inside of your elbow 48 hours before using the product.  

But this test isn’t adequate to show whether users might have an allergic reaction on their face, where skin is much more sensitive. And self-testing may not be reliable, yet Just For Men’s instructions never suggest getting a professional patch test from a dermatologist.  

Allergic reactions to Just For Men have been well-publicized and there have been many lawsuits. Yet Combe continues to market its best-selling product and advise nothing more than the inadequate elbow test, despite the serious allergic reactions many users have had.   

What Are the Symptoms of an Allergic Reaction?

Allergic reactions typically show up immediately or within a matter of hours. Typical allergic reactions to PPD in hair dye include:

• A skin rash
• Swelling
• Blisters
• Chemical burns on the face or scalp
• Weeping sores on the face
• Skin infections
• Itchy skin

Some allergic reactions are more serious and can cause your body to go into anaphylactic shock. Symptoms of a severe reaction include a fast, weak pulse, a rash and nausea and vomiting. This type of reaction can be life-threatening, so it is critical to get immediate medical care.
