What is the Status of Roundup Cancer Lawsuits in the United States?

In August 2018, a jury ordered Monsanto, the company that makes Roundup, to pay a man who argues that he got cancer because of using Roundup on a regular basis. He received $289 million in damages.

The man was a school groundskeeper in California and regularly used Roundup to kill weeds as part of his job. He stated that he likely used Roundup and Ranger Pro, another Monsanto product, roughly 30 times per year at the county school system in which he worked. 

The man involved in that lawsuit contracted non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which is a cancer of the lymph system. He was 46 at the time the jury came back with the results of his lawsuit. 

The claim in that lawsuit was that Monsanto failed to warn its users about the severe risks of getting cancer when consumers used their product.  But this man is not alone. Another roughly 5,000 similar lawsuits are pending throughout the United States. 

Based on the results of the California lawsuit, the similar legal claims may have winning results for cancer victims who used Roundup throughout the rest of the country.

Why Is Roundup Dangerous?

Roundup contains a commonly used herbicide called glyphosate. This substance is widely used as a weed killer on both private and commercial properties. It’s also sprayed directly on crops throughout the United States. In fact, some studies have noted that glyphosate can be found in a wide variety of cereals and other breakfast food products. 

The World Health Organization (WHO) and several independent studies have found a link between the development of cancer and glyphosate. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, which is WHO’s cancer-research division, reported that there was a positive association between glyphosate and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

It also noted that glyphosate damages DNA in both human cell and animal studies. The report was issued in 2015.  Although other countries have banned Roundup, it’s still in use regularly throughout the United States.

Regardless of the actual connection between cancer and Roundup, the central issue in Roundup lawsuits is that Monsanto should have told its consumers that there may be a connection between Roundup use and non-Hodgkin lymphoma and that Monsanto reportedly took steps to hide this information from the public.
