5 Deadliest Highways in Georgia

Georgia, like many states, is home to hundreds of car accidents in Atlanta that result in fatalities every year. But, many of these accidents often occur on some of the same roads over and over again. In fact, five Georgia highways have been dubbed “Georgia’s Deadliest Highways.” It is important that you’re extremely careful on these roads and use defensive driving techniques to decrease the chances of an accident. 

1. Interstate 20 in Atlanta

According to a study that analyzed traffic deaths across Georgia, I-20 in Atlanta is home to the deadliest road in Georgia. From 2013 to 2015, this highway saw 5 fatal crashes, all of which were right around mile point 44. 

Considering this area involved just one mile, the fact that saw 5 fatal crashes that resulted in five accidents is a scary statistic. In fact, I-20 in Georgia was the location of 34 deaths in 2015. Drivers should pay extra attention on this section of the road and slow down as necessary. 

2. Interstate 85 in Atlanta

This road saw five fatalities during the same period, according to the study. The accidents occurred around mile marker 18, but the fatal crashes occurred over about a one-mile and a half stretch of highway. Because the crashes were spaced further apart geographically, it was considered less dangerous than the one-mile stretch of I-20 noted above. 

3. Interstate 75 in Atlanta

Atlanta is also home to the third-most deadly stretch of highway—Interstate 75. This portion starts at around mile-marker 31 and stretches almost two miles. Over the two-year period in the study, there were also five fatalities on this portion of the interstate. It averaged out to be 2.7 fatal crashes per mile. 

4. Athens Highway in Loganville

The fourth most deadly highway finally leaves Atlanta—and travels to Loganville. Starting on mile-marker 106, this Loganville highway also saw five fatal crashes that caused five fatalities. This portion of the road stretches 2.29 miles, which means it had more than two fatal crashes per mile.

5. Interstate 85 in West Point

Interstate 85 is also dangerous outside of Atlanta as well. In West Point, there is a stretch of highway that starts at mile marker 64. That portion also experienced five deadly accidents in the two-year period of the study over a 3.92-mile section of the interstate. It resulted in 1.28 fatalities per mile. 

(Dis)Honorable Mention

There are also a couple of roads that made top marks in the list that aren’t really highways. For instance, Lee Street Southwest in Atlanta is actually ranked second in the most deadly roads in Georgia. Although it isn’t a highway and doesn’t make our list, it’s still worth urging drivers to be extra cautious on this road. In the same two-year period, there were 4.27 fatal crashes per mile starting at mile point 158.
