The Georgia Department of Transportation began inspecting signs on I-85 after a semi trailer clipped a sign that partially in Union City last week. Fox 5 Atlanta reports.
Highway signage is built to last. There are signs on the interstate that have been standing for over 20 years with no change from the weather. Yet even one failure is enough to bring attention to transportation officials.
Get the strong arm
The sign that caused the inspections was a large sign near Union City that pointed the direction to Atlanta. It had fallen enough for a commercial truck to hit the edge of it and bring it down. GDOT shut down all the northbound lanes near Flat Shoals Road and diverted traffic while it performed the investigation and repaired the sign.
Officials are focusing their efforts on signs that were placed around the same time as the one that fell to examine the fastenings. They want to discover if this was a freak accident, or if someone began putting up signs incorrectly. The sign had been hanging for around 20 years before it fell.
The spokesperson for the GDOT in the article says they had never seen a sign failure like this in the 15 years they’ve worked there.
