A horrific crash last Saturday caught national attention. Nine children and one adult were killed in an accident on I-65 in Butler County, Alabama. CNN reports.
So far, the multi-vehicle accident is believed to be weather-related. The area had a tropical depression sweep through, dumping rain. No one is quite sure how it happened, and the NTSB is sending ten investigators to study the incident.
The reasons are powerful. Nine children and one adult were killed in car fires due to the crash. Eight of the children were members of the Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch, according to the Butler County Coroner. The camp provides a home for neglected or abused school-aged children.
A CNN producer was also caught up in the crash and told the news agency there was a lot of water on the road. Their car hit a guardrail and set off the airbags, then came to a stop in the median. As she escaped, she noticed that other vehicles in the crash area were catching fire.
People were able to save a few people from the flames, but so many others lost their lives.
