What does Elmiron Do to Your Eyes?

Elmiron, a drug used to decrease bladder discomfort associated with a condition known as interstitial cystitis (IC), is known to cause retinal damage. Specifically, Elmiron is linked to a condition called pigmentary maculopathy (PM). PM can cause dim vision, difficulty adjusting to low light, and, if not corrected quickly, possible permanent vision loss.

Is There a Lawsuit Against Elmiron?

Plaintiffs are currently suing Elmiron and there are pending cases in federal and state courts. Litigation is still in its early stages, so it is not clear if there are currently any class-action suits, but it’s likely that there will be soon.

Is There Withdrawal from Elmiron?

There do not appear to be any withdrawal symptoms associated with stopping the use of Elmiron. However, progression of PM may continue even after a patient stops using the drug. You should always consult with your doctor before discontinuing the use of Elmiron or any other medication. 

Is Elmiron Off the Market?

The FDA has stated that there is now a warning about severe eye injury on Elmiron’s label, but the drug is still on the market. Despite the drug’s dangers, it is still being prescribed to patients who may not be fully informed about the risk to their vision.

What Are the Side Effects of Elmiron?

In addition to PM, side effects of Elmiron can include diarrhea, hair loss, nausea, headache, stomach upset, and abdominal pain. There is a chance that Elmiron also causes weight gain, but Elmiron does not list that as a side effect. Early signs of retinal damage due to Elmiron can include blurred vision and eye pain.

Does Elmiron Cause Liver Damage?

In people who have taken Elmiron, there has been a small chance for abnormal liver tests. While there does not seem to be current documentation of liver damage at this stage, it also hasn’t been ruled out as an effect of Elmiron.
