According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, three people were killed on Sunday in a matter of hours in Clayton County, bringing the total of car deaths up to 18 this year. This is four more than last year.
In response, Clayton County Commissioner Felicia Franklin is planning a candlelight vigil to raise awareness and, hopefully, gain more federal and state funding for infrastructure improvements.
They will hold the vigil at noon, July 21, at the Clayton County Justice Center in Jonesboro. The county hopes to get funding for better lighting, cameras, crosswalks, and sidewalks.
“We have to have safe overhead crosswalks, sidewalks, proper lighting and cameras to catch reckless drivers while monitoring our traffic to keep people safe in our community,” Franklin said in a release.
Individuals must be held responsible for car crashes, but communities can also do things to make safer roadways. If a stretch of road gets regular car crashes, that’s a matter to investigate.
It’s not just for public safety reasons, but also for liability reasons. While difficult, it is possible to sue a government for failing to do upkeep on a road or to let a dangerous condition exist. According to the news report, Tara Boulevard is one such area.
