Atlanta is known for its traffic issues, but a lot of them happen because of serious accidents. If you were stuck on I-285 South today, there was a good reason traffic slowed to a crawl.
The AJC reports that a driver lost control of their vehicle on the ramp at Lavista Road and blocked traffic during the morning commute today. This was no mild fender-bender though. Photos from the scene revealed a white car had wrapped itself around a tree and scattered debris over the ramp and one right lane of I-285.
Police believe the driver went off the road and rolled down the embankment into a tree. The road was closed at the tail end of the morning rush hour to investigate and reopened the road around 10:30 AM.
The driver of the crash went to the hospital with moderate-to-severe injuries. There have been no further updates about their condition.
Anyone driving through Atlanta knows that trees line many of the interstates. Any accident that runs a vehicle off the roads has a good chance of hitting one. Guard rails and sound walls protect some areas, but a tree crash is unforgiving. Tree crashes focus a lot of energy into one small spot on the car, and this is why these crashes can be so dangerous. One look at the images in the article above proves this.
