You probably know that there is a minimum speed limit on interstates around Atlanta. It’s not a problem if everyone is stuck in traffic, but when you’re the only one going below the limit, you put yourself and others in danger by breaking the speed expectations.
Even if the cause is not your fault, the danger is still there as this case from Fox 5 Atlanta shows.
According to the report, a Nissan Altima was driving south on I-75 near the Allgood Road Bridge during the evening when it suffered a mechanical failure. A Tesla following behind the Altima noticed the problem and slowed down, but a Sprinter van behind the two did not.
The Sprinter crashed into both vehicles and sent the Tesla into a fourth vehicle before hitting the left barrier wall. Everyone in the Tesla was hospitalized, one with life-threatening injuries. They were taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital.
No other injuries were reported in the incident.
Accidents from mechanical failure are pretty rare, but they do happen. If you feel one happen, be sure to hit your hazard lights immediately. This is a quick way to notify drivers that there is a problem with your vehicle. Then, if possible, pull your car over to the shoulder.
This is also a good reminder to leave extra space between vehicles on the interstate. That space gives you room to move if there’s a problem ahead of you.
