High-ranking people need to be careful around alcohol and drugs. One slipup won’t just get you in trouble with the law. It could also threaten your position. 11 Alive reports that Polk County’s chief probate court clerk is now facing DUI charges.
He was arrested yesterday for an accident that happened back in late April. The police were summoned to a single-car wreck. The truck he was in was hanging from an embankment. At first, he told officers that he had fallen asleep, but the officer smelled alcohol.
He admitted to having a few drinks, even though it was the middle of the afternoon. He also admitted that he had taken two anti-anxiety pills that weren’t prescribed to him, and that he hadn’t slept in several days due to a death in the family.
After failing several sobriety tests, the clerk was charged with DUI and failure to maintain his lane. He has been placed on administrative leave until the case is complete.
Grief can push us completely out of our normal behavior, but it is not an excuse to drive DUI. The clerk is very fortunate that no other vehicle was involved in this crash. Otherwise, he might have caused another death on top of the other.
If you are grieving, please consider having someone else run your errands and take you to and from work until you feel safe enough to drive again.
