The Georgia Department of Public Safety said that, based on preliminary findings, the car had changed lanes and ran into the two bikers. It is possible that the bikes were riding side-by-side, which is legal. One of the bikers was airlifted to the hospital in serious condition, but is expected to survive.
Due to the helicopter landing, the southbound interstate had to be closed to traffic. Lanes reopened around 1 P.M. on Sunday.
We would like to take a moment to remind readers about motorcycle safety. As the weather gets warmer, we will see more and more motorcycles on the road. Drivers should make a point to look twice before moving lanes and listen for the sounds of motorcycles.
Motorcycles, due to their smaller size and softer sound, can be hard to detect. If you don’t look before you merge, you could end up in an accident just like this.
