You don’t hear the term joyride much anymore, but it still happens and it still ends in the usual way. A crash. Two teens are accused of stealing a vehicle and crashing it head-on into another car, killing a young child inside. 11 Alive reports.
Here’s what we know from the preliminary investigation. Officers were patrolling near Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard and Metropolitan Parkway when they got an alert about a stolen vehicle. When the vehicle was located, it drove off toward Lakewood Avenue. That’s where the crash happened.
Get the strong arm
When police caught up with the head-on crash, they found a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old as the alleged culprits of the stolen vehicle. They were arrested at the scene. The young child and the driver of the second vehicle were taken to the hospital, but the child did not survive. The driver is still in critical condition.
The two teens were charged and released to their parents, but further charges are pending. The younger boy was charged with theft by receiving stolen property. The older boy had a firearm and was charged with possession of a firearm under the age of 18.
Now that the child has died, and possibly the other driver as well, their charges are about to get much more serious. Our condolences to the victim’s family.
