How to Know if You Can File a Zantac Lawsuit
To have a valid case, you will need to prove that:
- You took Zantac (or some form of ranitidine).
- You received a cancer diagnosis that qualifies for the lawsuit.
- There is a link between Zantac and your cancer diagnosis.
The first two points are pretty easy to prove. You can show prescription and pharmacy records. (If you took an over-the-counter form of Zantac, it would be more complicated.) You can also prove a cancer diagnosis with medical records.
The third point is the most difficult. Your chances will depend on how often you took the medication. It also depends on how long you were taking Zantac. At least a year of taking the drug is likely to give you a stronger case.
Talk to a Zantac lawyer to know your chances for sure. Don’t assume your eligibility without speaking to a professional. Even if you feel like you don’t have a case, you could be surprised.

Don’t Wait to See if You Can File
Legal cases take time to build, and you have limited time to file. In Georgia, the statute of limitations is two years (Georgia Code § 9-3-33). That means you must file your case within two years of an injury.

Why People Are Filing Zantac Lawsuits
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requested the removal of Zantac from the U.S. market in April 2020. Some tests showed dangerous levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). NDMA is a cancer-causing contaminant.
The FDA found that the NDMA in some Zantac/ranitidine products increased with time. If someone stores the drug at above room temperature, NDMA levels could become too dangerous.
The FDA asked Zantac’s manufacturer, Amneal Pharmaceutical, to voluntarily take the drug off the market. Because of the removal, new Zantac and ranitidine products (or current prescriptions) are not available in the U.S.
Risks of NDMA
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), evidence has shown that NDMA is a “potent carcinogen,” meaning it could cause cancer. Reports have shown a link between NDMA and colorectal or gastric cancer.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has listed NDMA as a likely cancerous substance for humans. The National Toxicology Program (NTP) also believes NDMA could be harmful to humans. In lab settings, NDMA is used to induce cancer in rats.
Cancers Linked to NDMA
Research has linked NDMA exposure to primary cancers like:
- Stomach cancer
- Liver cancer
- Small intestine cancer
- Colorectal cancer
- Esophageal cancer
NDMA also has some association with pancreatic cancer, leukemia, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and early-onset prostate cancers.
If you received a cancer diagnosis for any of the listed cancers after taking Zantac, you could have a case. Discuss your details with an experienced Zantac lawyer to know if you can file a lawsuit.
Filing a Zantac Lawsuit
Those who took Zantac are looking into their legal options. Some individuals took Zantac regularly for many years for stomach pain and other symptoms. Most users would not have continued using the drug if they knew about the cancer risks.
If you developed cancer after taking Zantac, you might be entitled to compensation for your costs. Your damages could include:
- Medical bills
- Cancer treatment costs
- Lost wages
- Pain and suffering
- Punitive damages
To find out if you have a Zantac lawsuit, speak with an experienced lawyer today. If a loved one died from cancer after taking Zantac, you might also have a wrongful death case.
If you don’t end up qualifying for a lawsuit, you might have other options. You could qualify for a class-action lawsuit against Zantac’s manufacturer. Don’t wait to learn about your legal options.
FDA Warning for Zantac
The FDA released a warning on September 13, 2019. The agency found that the NDMA in ranitidine was between 3,000 to 26,000 times higher than the safe FDA-approved levels. (The safe level is below 100 nanograms, while a study showed over 2.5 million nanograms in a Zantac 150 mg pill.)
Since the FDA warning, the agency has been investigating. Their investigation led to the withdrawal of Zantac in 2020.
